Superbowl 2023 - Eagles vs Chiefs Match Preview

Background

The 57th Super Bowl, set to take place on Sunday, February 12th between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs is one of the most anticipated for years and fans across the US and the rest of the world will be tuning in to find out which team will take home the most prestigious prize in American Football.

The NFL’s annual final playoff game always attracts a huge audience and this year’s event will be no different. With two of the most competitive and dominant teams in the NFL going head-to-head, it’s sure to provide a spectacular watch.

Let’s take a look at the biggest strengths of each team heading into this year’s Super Bowl as well as the run of form they’ve been on and their history in the competition, starting with the Eagles.

The Eagles

Although they’ve made three previous Super Bowl appearances in their history, the Eagles have won it just once - in a thrilling game against the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LII in 2017.

Going into this year’s game, the Eagles have been in excellent form, having won their last three games, with notable victories over the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers.

The Eagles will be hoping their star quarterback, Jalen Hurts will continue his excellent form, having 36 touchdowns this season as well as being named a finalist for this season’s MVP award (losing out to Mahomes).

Although Jalen Hurts is their star player, the Eagles have plenty of other talent to support him, including A.J. Brown, who has had a phenomenal season that included 11 touchdowns. There’s also the likes of Miles Sanders, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert - giving the Eagles an incredibly strong line-up, that’s more than a match for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs

The Chiefs have a long and storied history in the Super Bowl and have made four previous appearances, including appearing in the very first game back in 1967, where they lost to the Green Bay Packers. Two of those four appearances have come in the last five years, including a win over San Francisco 49ers in 2019.

Just like the Eagles, the Chiefs have enjoyed an excellent run leading up to Super Bowl 2023, with recent big wins over the Raiders and the Broncos before their victories in the NFL Divisional Round and NFL Conference Championships.

Patrick Mahomes is of course one of the Chiefs’ biggest weapons. The 27 year old will be the youngest quarterback to have reached three Super Bowls and has been in electric form this season, winning the MVP. The Chiefs aren’t solely reliant on Mahomes though; they also have incredible strength elsewhere on the field, including Travis Kelce, Chris Jones and Joe Thuney.

The Coaches

Of course the Super Bowl isn’t just about the player; The coaches play an incredibly important role too. The two coaches for this year’s game are Nick Sirianni as the Eagles’ head coach and Andy Reid, who’ll be leading the Chiefs into this year’s game, which will be his third as their coach.

Sirianni will be looking to upset the odds by getting a win over one of the most respected coaches in the game; not to mention the league’s most formidable team.

Speaking after the Eagles’ victory over San Francisco, he said - “This is something you dream about your whole life. Like I said to the guys - We’ve all been dreaming about it, whether you were dreaming about it when you were 2, 10, 14, 18 or when you got in the NFL.

Who Has The Edge?

The betting favourites for the 2023 Super Bowl are the Kansas City Chiefs. They’ve had an incredibly dominant season, winning 16 of the 19 regular games they played this season, which matches the franchise record for total number of wins. That said, the Eagles have also had a superb season, with a 14-3 record that includes victories over the New York Giants, who they also defeated in the NFL Divisional round.

The Eagles are known for their excellent defence and a big part of the game will come down to whether or not their defence can cope with the Chiefs’ formidable attack.

The Chiefs and the Eagles have played each other nine previous times, with the Chiefs marginally coming out on top with a 5-4 record. Their first meeting was in 1972, where the Eagles took the victory by just a single point.

Whatever happens, the 2023 Super Bowl is set to be an explosive one. Be sure to tune in on the 12th February so you can be part of history.
