March Madness Betting Odds

March 2021

March Madness betting is hugely popular among NCAA college basketball fans due to the wide range of variables you can bet on. March Madness 2021 was more highly anticipated than usual since last year’s tournament was canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. There were also several Cinderella stories in the first and second rounds, which have added to the thrill of watching and betting on March Madness 2021.

In the first round, we saw No. 13 seed North Texas takedown No. 4 Purdue in the South Regional, No. 12 Oregon State defeat No. 5 Tennessee, and No. 11 Syracuse eliminating No. 6 San Diego State. A surprising second round upset came from the West Regional when the No. 7 Oregon eliminated No. 2 Iowa. The Midwest Regional has been full of second round upsets, with No. 8 seed Loyola-Chicago taking out No. 1 seed Illinois, No. 11 seed Syracuse defeating No. 3 seed West Virginia, and No. 4 seed Oklahoma State losing to No. 12 Oregon State. South Regional No. 15 seed Oral Roberts has knocked out both No. 2 seed Ohio State and No. 7 Florida in the first two rounds of the tournament, and it will be exciting to see just how far Oral Roberts can go. Some strong teams heading into March Madness have continued to dominate in the first and second rounds.

Gonzaga decimated 16th seed Norfolk State 98-55 in round one, and picked up a big win of 87-71 over No. 8 Oklahoma in round two. Michigan also took on the 16th seed in the East Regional in round one. They claimed an easy 82-66 victory over Texas Southern. Michigan continued their success in round two when they sailed past LSU to secure their spot in the Sweet 16. Baylor has dominated the South Regional bracket, taking down Hartford in the first round 79-55 and Wisconsin in the second round 76-63. With No. 1 seed in the Midwest Regional — Illinois — out of the championship picture, No. 2 seed Houston has an even better shot at getting to the Elite Eight.

Houston will take on No. 11 Syracuse in the Sweet 16 round. Syracuse has already upset the No. 6 San Diego and No. 3 West Virginia, so they are such to give Houston a run for their money in round three. Illinois headed into March Madness as a favourite to make it into the Final Four, but suffered a devastating loss in the second round to Loyola-Chicago. This major upset was set in motion in the first half when Loyola-Chicago closed out the half with a nine-point lead. They then went on to close out the game with a 71-58 win. This made Illinois the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated from March Madness 2021. Loyola-Chicago came into the tournament on a hot streak, having won 17 of their final 18 regular season games. They’ve continued this momentum throughout the tournament, and their Sweet 16 match against No. 12 Oregon State is definitely a must-see match.

These upsets, although shocking and disheartening for fans of the team that was upset, are not uncommon in the early rounds of the March Madness tournament. Round one and round two games take place two days apart, so it’s easier for a weaker team to hit a hot couple of days and advance to round three. The true test comes in the Sweet 16 third round when all teams have had six days off since their last match. This is generally when the higher-seeded teams who haven’t already been eliminated begin to take out the lower-seeded teams.

How to bet on March Madness

There are a few things to familiarize yourself with if you are new to betting on March Madness, especially with the odds available to you. The first odd available is the match result. When you bet on the match result, the odds are displayed next to the team. For example, if a team has 1.08 odds, it means if they win, you will get your bet times 1.08 back as your winnings. You can also bet on handicaps and alternative handicaps. The handicaps allow you to bet on a team winning by a specified point margin.

So, if the Gonzaga Bulldogs are listed as a -13.5 with 1.90 odds, it means Gonzaga will have to win by at least 13.5 points in order for you to win 1.90 times your bet. Alternative handicaps provide a variety of potential point margin scenarios you can bet on. Betting on the total number of points scored in a game is another popular betting choice. Similar to the alternative handicaps, there are alternative point totals you can bet on. The seeding of the teams in each region factor into the odds.

The teams that are ranked No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 are the best teams in their respective region and are more likely to win, so they have lower odds because it’s more likely to happen. No. 13, No. 14, and No. 15 seeds are the weaker teams in their respective region, so you’ll typically see higher odds associated with these teams. So, don’t bet on two teams from the same region making it to the final four. The regional winners will be determined in the Elite 8 round, and one winner from each region (East, West, Midwest, and South) will advance to the Final Four.

Top NCAA Teams

At the time of writing, the top NCAA teams most likely to qualify for the Final Four were the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Baylor Bears, Houston Cougars, and Michigan Wolverines. Gonzaga is a powerhouse in the NCAA, and is the favourite to win the tournament. Odds of 1.28 are available for Gonzaga to qualify for the Final Four.

You can also bet on Gonzaga winning the championship with odds of 2.50. Baylor isn’t far behind Gonzaga. Odds of Baylor making the Final Four are 1.50 and 4.50 for winning the tournament. The Michigan Wolverines are the No. 1 seed in the East Regional bracket and dominated their opponents — Texas Southern and LSU — in the first two rounds. Michigan is in good position to continue to lead the East Regional, and have 7.50 odds of clinching the championship.

A few other teams are also contenders to win the tournament or appear in the Final Four given the upsets that have taken place so far. With powerhouses Illinois, Texas, and Ohio State eliminated from the tournament, a few other teams now have a better chance at making it all the way to the final. PowerPlay offers betting odds on these newly-favoured teams. Houston has picked up a big 87-56 win over Cleveland State in the first round, though their momentum appeared to slow down when they took on Rutgers in the second round and just narrowly defeated the No. 10 seed 63-60. Odds of Houston making the Final Four are 1.85 while odds of them winning the tournament are 9.50.

Houston’s odds have improved since the No. 1 seed in their region, Illinois, was knocked out in round two. The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers have also proven they are contenders to make it to the Final Four. Their impressive victory over the top seed Illinois has shown Loyola-Chicago should not be counted out just yet. You can bet on Loyola-Chicago being in the Final Four with odds of 2.37.

March Madness Betting Strategy

Those new to betting tend to find it easier to get started by betting on the game winner. It is simple and straightforward since there are only two options to choose from. Typically, teams with a strong defense perform better in the playoff season, so if you are torn between who to bet on, you may want to consider which team puts up a stronger defensive effort more frequently.

It’s also important to consider how a team ended their regular season. If they crumbled, fell apart, and barely made it into the tournament, it is unlikely they will make it very far. Don’t expect a team who picked up a lot of losses late in the season to magically come together in the March Madness tournament. Conversely, a team who won a lot of games at the end of the regular season could be a solid team back in the playoffs since they’ll be highly motivated to maintain that momentum. Those with more experience betting on March Madness will likely prefer to parlay their bets, which provides more of an opportunity to win big. Parlay bets involve betting on several outcomes, such as game winners, to improve your chances of winning big.

However, to win a parlay bet, you have to win all the variables that you bet on. If you have a favourite team, it is crucial to look at their chances of winning from a neutral perspective. Loyalty for a particular college basketball team is great, but betting a lot of money on your favourite team when it’s a 15th seed and didn’t have a stellar regular season is not a team that’s likely to do well in the tournament, and therefore not very likely to provide you with a great return on your initial bet, if any.
