World Cup 2022 Format

If you’re curious as to how exactly the 2022 World Cup tournament will be formatted, or you’re not very familiar with how football tournaments work, then you’ll want to read some of this useful information below and we’ll tell you everything you need to know.
The 2022 World Cup will follow a similar format to previous World Cup games where we will see 32 football teams being divided into a total of eight groups which will all be different. The groups have been labelled A-H and will consist of four teams in each one.
Each team will play each other once in a single match, known as a round-robin type format in which the teams will rotate through each team in their group of four. From here, the teams will then move onto the next stage of the tournament where each A – H group has a winner.

The groups for the World Cup 2022 are as follows:
  • Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands
  • Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales
  • Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
  • Group D: France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia
  • Group E: Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan
  • Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia
  • Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
  • Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea

For reference, Canada is in group F, alongside Belgium, Morocco and Croatia.
After the group stages, the best two teams that have competed within each of the eight groups shall advance towards the knockout rounds, which starts with a round of 16, immediately following the group stage.
The final will then take place on the 18th of December, and the third place game is currently set to be held on the day before. Many of the games are set to take place at eight different locations across Doha.
